The following is a general report about the Specialty
by Kathie Upton....................

The 2009 Basenji Club of Canada Specialty in Calgary on July 11th was a great success and fun was had by all. The weather was sunny for the weekend of our event which was nice as there really wasn’t much good weather in Alberta this summer.

The Booster on Friday the 10th of July was well-attended.

The Handling Seminar given by Larry Clark was very informative and helpful, and all who attended did a much better job handling their dogs the rest of the weekend. I know I did.

Fun Night, put on by Arlene Bacon, was definitely a lot of fun. The prizes were wonderful. Debra Verzyl outdid herself with costumes for her clan, and George was a hands-down winner for best costume.

The silent auction table drew a lot of folks over and kept the volunteers, Elisabeth Verni and Nancy Albert, very busy most of the day. Deb Verzyl once again came to the rescue as she managed to put together a lot of the auction items with some of the donations she acquired for our event.

The Specialty itself seemed a bit rushed. Sorry about that folks. Some things we have no control over.

The Specialty banquet was also well-attended. There were a few problems but our chairperson, Jennie Behles, managed to sort them out for us. Margret Robertson gave us a delightful and informative talk on the Basenjis of old (“Dainty Dancer” for one) and brought along some beautiful artifacts and pictures of some of her dogs. The judges, Sally Warnous and Judy Webb, gave their comments on our dogs and were pleased with our entries.

Then it was time for the live auction. Denis Arrand once again did a great job as auctioneer. Everyone seemed to be having a lot of fun bidding on the wide array of Basenji-related items. The colour logo drawing went to Lynn Arrand and the black and white version went to Elisabeth Verni.

Thank you to all the folks who attended and contributed to this successful event and we hope to see you again next year.

2009 Specialty Fun Night Word Art

Games included:

Rodeo Round-up ... Basenji’s and Owner’s will have to round up toys/treats.
Fishing for Basenji’s ... Treats in socks are used to “fish” the Basenji’s back to the owners.
Chuckwagon Races ... Owners/handlers (horses) have to race a course holding carts and Basenji’s.
Costume Party Hoe Down ... The best costume girl and boy.
Barrel Racing ... Owner/handler and Basenji race through a barrel racing course.
Bronco Busting for Basenjis ... A short exercise for Basenji’s and Owners in Bronc Busting.

As was expected, the Fun Night was, well, fun. I think everyone had a good time, both in the viewing of, and the involvement of, the participants. Our costume contest was a great success with some very innovative costumes. We had chuckwagon races, barrel racing, and a Fishing for Basenjis! George Verzyl won for his Caveman and Saber Tooth Basenji costume. But, everyone went home with something. It also gave some of the people some insight as to how ‘obedient’ Basenjis really can be.

We were so busy with the 'Fun' part of it, we forgot about the ‘wine and cheese'! I hope everyone comes out for our next year’s fun night at Sarnia..... it promises to be a great night as well. Hopefully, we will fit even more games and ‘Fun’ into it!

The above report was provided by Arlene Bacon.
